Nocturnal Animals, Tom Ford

A surprising, captivating and sticking-with-you whether you like it or not kind of movie. It’s memorable and complex, it reaches deep levels and it leaves you in a state of involuntary reflection. First of all, Nocturnal Animals is about choices, consequences and their impact in time. The action thread is interwoven from several parts: an art gallery owner from Los Angeles receives the manuscript of a novel written by her first husband. She begins to read it and flashes from the past come to her mind, as the history of the two and the key to understanding the novel are gradually revealed. The current life of the heroine, Susan Morrow (played by Amy Adams), is at that suspension point where questions like „Ever feel like your life has turned into something you never intended?” appear – the dashing husband (played by Armie Hammer) is becoming more and more distant and, as it turns out, unfaithful; the artistic environment seems hollow, the house is empty and cold, the art works explore only ugliness. Something haunts and troubles Susan, a conscience burdened by the choices of the past, by what she had left behind.

Dedicated to her, the book written by Edward Sheffield (played by Jake Gyllenhaal who also impersonates Tony Hastings, the main character of the fiction) is a dramatic story in which Tony, Edward’s alter ego, is driving with his wife and daughter on a deserted road in Texas. They are attacked by three locals who harass and terrorize them for unbearably long moments and ultimately, Tony is separated from the girls. They are abducted from under his terrified, helpless eyes. As the reading progresses, Susan begins to realize and manifest a growing guilt while becoming, in turn, witness to the disintegration of the life she had built on the foundation of that guilt. The novel also helps us understand the size of Edward’s drama, which took him 20 years to release from by writing „Nocturnal Animals”. At the end of the movie we learn the details of the real story, we understand why Susan herself, like the three evil doers, was a Nocturnal Animal and we also figure that, unlike the small crashed bat, she will always fall on her feet. Even if the abandonment lesson is as costly as the emerald green dress good to wear when you decide to start over.

“Nocturnal Animals” is Tom Ford’s second successful cinematic atempt after “A Single Man” and it reconfirmes that when you have something to say and find the formula to say it in style, you can make a film with an excellent content without being a professional filmmaker. The details are all coordinated – external objects as clues and mirror for the inside pulse (the REVENGE picture in the galley or the weird one in the entrance hall, where a man shoots another from the distance and the latter smiles foolishly at us instead of looking at the aggressor or trying the smallest gesture of defense), the subtle and yet explicit presentation of Tony’s painful stages of evolution (intense acting game from Gyllenhaal) – and this is that master’s touch linking everything together and turning the movie into an insight generating experience.

The cast is more than inspired and here I mean not only the main actors, but also the few support characters essential for the action thread: Susan’s implacable mother, the stepping-over-the-line Texas sheriff, the genuine psychopat-by-nature villain (Aaron Taylor-Johnson even received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor). I also noticed the impressive soundtrack signed by Abel Korzeniowski, which anchors the heavy atmosphere, supporting and completing the hypnotic visuals.

In the online space, the opinions towards this movie are divided up to the point of controversy. It’s love or hate, given the hard to digest ugliness, the abundance of harsh, tense scenes and the fact that the true meaning of the story is accessible only by identifying the connections between fiction and reality. But I take the three Golden Globe nominations – Best Director, Best Screenplay and the above mentioned one – as a good sign! Kudos to Tom Ford!
